New Zealand Introduces New Post-Study Work Visa Options for International Students
Published: 29 May 2026
Great news for international students planning to study in New Zealand! The New Zealand Government has announced major updates to its post-study work visa policies, creating more flexible pathways for graduates to stay and work after completing their studies.
These changes are designed to support New Zealand’s growing demand for skilled workers while making the country even more attractive for international students.
What’s New?
Starting from 16 November 2026, New Zealand will introduce:
- A brand-new Short-term Graduate Work Visa
- Extended eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa (PSWV)
These updates will provide graduates with more opportunities to gain work experience and transition into long-term employment in New Zealand.
New Short-term Graduate Work Visa
International students who complete eligible qualifications in New Zealand will soon be able to apply for a 6-month open work visa.
This visa is designed for graduates who are not eligible for the regular Post Study Work Visa but still want time to find employment and potentially move into an Accredited Employer Work Visa.
Key Highlights
- 6 months of open work rights
- Opportunity to search for skilled employment
- Pathway to employer-sponsored work visas
- Applications open from 16 November 2026
Eligibility Requirements
Students must:
- Complete a qualification at NZQCF Level 5–7
- Study full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks
- Hold sufficient funds (minimum NZD $5,000)
- Apply within 3 months after their student visa expires
- Not have previously held a Post Study Work Visa or Short-term Graduate Work Visa
Certain qualifications such as English language, foundation, or bridging courses are not eligible.
Important Conditions
- Business ownership is not allowed
- Visa holders cannot sponsor partners or children under this visa category
- Only one Short-term Graduate Work Visa can ever be granted
Post Study Work Visa Eligibility Expanded
Another major update is the extension of the Post Study Work Visa eligibility to students completing:
- Graduate Diplomas at NZQCF Level 7
To qualify, applicants must also hold a bachelor’s degree completed either in New Zealand or overseas.
What This Means for Students
Eligible graduates can now receive:
- An open work visa
- Work opportunities across New Zealand
- A stronger pathway toward long-term employment and future residency options
The visa duration will match the length of study completed in New Zealand, up to a maximum of 1 year.
Special Notes for Graduate Diploma Students
Students with a Graduate Diploma may still qualify for a Post Study Work Visa even without a bachelor’s degree if their qualification appears in New Zealand’s approved occupation list (Appendix 13).
However:
- They must work in the occupation linked to their qualification
- If their qualification is not listed, they may instead apply for the new 6-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa
Why These Changes Matter
These new policies aim to:
- Attract high-quality international students
- Help graduates gain valuable New Zealand work experience
- Support industries facing skill shortages
- Strengthen New Zealand’s reputation as a leading study destination
For international students, this creates more flexibility and clearer pathways from study to employment.
